From Tear-Down to TrΓ©s Chic: A Historic Hidden Beauty

A Historic Home that Seamlessly Blends Past & Present

by Alexis Johnson

Nestled amongst the 100-year-old oaks that grace this historic Wilmington neighborhood, a hidden gem has undergone a remarkable transformation. Built in 1888 and originally the private practice of local African American doctor Leroy Upperman, this home wasn't just renovated–it was lovingly restored to its former glory.

The Bellewood Group, a family-run team with a passion for preservation, acquired the disheveled property in December 2021. They labored meticulously to weave the home's rich history with modern amenities while uninterrupting the quaint downtown charm that surrounds it.

The renovation was extensive, reaching down to the studs. The team took care to restore historic details like crown moldings, window trims, and even the operating transom windows above the interior doors. Bright bay windows in the living room overlook the brick-paved streets, while custom built-ins flank the marble-clad gas fireplace. Bellewood also installed a refurbished antique clawfoot tub, offering a tribute to the home’s original fixtures.

Alexis combined new and old furniture to compliment the history of the home.
